Garden Maintenance in Autumn

Our gardens can bring us so much joy and satisfaction during the spring and summer but the time comes when we have to think about garden maintenance in autumn.
Obviously, every garden is different and the necessary jobs will depend upon the size of the garden, but these chores may include:
Raking leaves – Autumn will bring the start of falling leaves and these can soon become a major clearance job if not kept up with. Too many leaves may smother and kill plants or grass as well as becoming a slip hazard as they degrade. A regular clearance of leaves can help keep on top what otherwise can become a large job. Composting leaves can become a nutrient-rich mulch and they are worth adding to your compost bin.
Getting a chance to mow the lawn will become more difficult as damper weather sets in but there will still be some opportunities on the occasional dry and bright day, so take these opportunities when they arise. Grass growth will be much less at this time of year but a tidy up will always look good.
Weeding is a good plan as you do not want any perennial weeds getting themselves established over the winter.
Plant and Soil Care Garden Maintenance in Autumn
Consider cutting back your perennial plants that have finished flowering or producing fruit and help preserve their energy for next season
Apply some mulch around the base of plants to insulate the soil and protect the roots from cold or freezing temperatures over the winter period
Think ahead to spring and plant your bulbs. A spray of tulips or daffodils will bring much colour in the spring
Remember to protect any delicate plants with protective coverings or bring potted plants indoors or to a sheltered location
Other Garden Maintenance

The above will help keep your garden looking tidy and prepared for the season to come but there are, of course, other jobs that may need doing. You might want to think about clearing gutters ahead of the winter, make sure your water butts are clean and ready, repair fences and clear any other garden waste that may have built up.
And don’t forget your local wildlife; prepare bird feeders, create places for hibernation, clean bird baths, add a nesting box or maybe a bug hotel. And always check your bonfires before lighting them!
A garden can bring so much enjoyment to our senses with sights, smells and fresh air to be enjoyed all year round but, if your mobility is impaired, garden maintenance in autumn may not be easy.
